THE INSTALL

When I was working for the Clippers I was able to go to Houston and watch Jeff Van Gundy coach Team USA. It was the first day of their training camp for an upcoming international tournament and they didn't have much time to prepare. For over 3 hours I watched him install the team's entire offensive and defensive system.

The term "Install" is used a ton in football and can be extremely effective in basketball. Putting in a shell of your entire system allows you to really work from the outside in, as well as continuing to add sets, defensive schemes, and other concepts to your base. I've leaned heavy on a detailed install in both my G-League years, Summer leagues and now in Taiwan.

The Install is a great example of what educators call the "Whole part whole method."

Whole Part Whole Practice

"The whole part whole practice method is when a coach observes the whole skill before identifying areas to improve. The sports coach would then develop and improve an area within their performance before bringing the whole skill back together."

The first time I heard about the Whole Part Whole method was listening to Coach Mike Dunlap speak at a Final Four Clinic.
